My family put down roots there in the 1800s. Real roots. Not a stopover. Not a chapter. They chose that dry, hard stretch of West Texas and decided this was home.
My grandfather became the mayor of Stanton. In a town that size, there's no hiding behind a title. You're making decisions for people who know where you live, who sit next to you at church, who remember what you said last week. That kind of responsibility doesn't come with distance. It comes with accountability.
Hopkins County.
One of the seven families that helped build it.
On the other side of the family, the roots run just as deep. My people were one of the seven founding families of Hopkins County. Not the seventh to arrive. One of the seven that helped build it.
My grandfather on that side ran the city cemetery in Sulphur Springs for years. Quiet work. Necessary work. The kind of role that doesn't draw attention unless it's done wrong.
That's not something you put on a résumé. That's something that settles into you.

My father, Jack Ward, started Jack Ward Insurance in the 1960s. It later became The Ward Agency. He built it the only way he knew how — in the same towns where our family had been showing up for generations. Same communities. Same people. Same handshake.
And over time, you learn where that work really gets tested. Not when things are smooth. Anyone can look good when it's easy. It's when the claim stalls. When the costs don't make sense. When someone you care about gets a diagnosis and the paperwork suddenly feels like a foreign language.
